IndyWIN Committee

For several years the Greater Indianapolis NAACP Branch 3053 IndyWIN Committee has carried out a Collection Drive. As a result of the generous donations from our branch membership and associates, our committee has been able to make donations to a few organizations that assist people in need. Coburn Place on 604 E 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205, is one of them.

Coburn Place Safe Haven

Mission Statement

Coburn Place opens a door through which women and children fleeing domestic violence can find safe haven. Coburn Place transforms battered lives by healing painful emotions, teaching valuable life skills, and fostering financial independence and long-term self-sufficiency.

* Coburn Place Safe Haven is the largest and most comprehensive transitional housing program in Greater Indianapolis that is specifically designed to meet the wide-ranging needs of survivors fleeing from domestic abuse. The program offers 35 unique individual apartment homes to women and their children who have left domestic violence situations. Each resident is offered support and resources to help them become self-sufficient and to break the cycle of violence in their lives.

On Dec. 19, 2013, the IndyWIN Committe made our annual Christmas donation of toiletries to the residents of Coburn Place Safe Haven. Thank you to those of you who donated items and made this possible. Our Collection Drive is on going. We hope to make donations to other community organizaions throughout the year.

IndyWIN Collection Drive

The Greater Indianapolis NAACP Branch 3053 IndyWIN Committee is collecting items to donate to Coburn Place, The Women’s Prison, or The Julian Center.

We are asking for your help in this effort. We are in need of these items:

* Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, shampoo, bar soap, deodorant, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, etc.

* Spiritual and/ or Encouraging books and magazines

* Educational activity books for children

* Gently used or new clothing for women and children, and household items

First Lady Michelle Obama at the

NAACP 101st Annual Conventon in Kansas City.

On July 12, 2010, the first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, spoke at the 101st NAACP Convention in Kansas City. She discussed the future of the NAACP and the African American community, as well her key issue: childhood obesity. The first lady encouraged personal accountability to create change that starts at the individual, expands into communities and, ultimately, results in a cultural shift. She spoke on her efforts to create a healthier generation of kids through the "Let's Move!" campaign. Here is a small exerpt from her speech: “I know that I stand here today and I know where my husband stands, and it is because of this organization,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “However, I think the founders of this organization would agree that our work is not yet done. We need to keep focused, discipline, and keep fighting for our children and future generations to come.”

Other speakers touched on a variety of topics such as the impact of racial disparities in the criminal justice system, proposed courses of action for the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and more.

NAACP 100th Anniversary Gala

On Saturday, August 1, 2009 the Indiana WIN sponsored a Gala in celebration of NAACP’s 100th Anniversary. It's theme was “Remarkable Women Improving the Nation”

There were three hundred people in attendance. The Indiana WIN's NAACP Gala Planning Committee was led by Barbara Holder, the Indiana State Conference of Branches WIN Chairperson. It consisted of WIN members from Indiana branches, representatives of other organizations, and the private sector. Many of our local branch WIN Committee members were on this planning committee. The photos below feature many members of the Indiana WIN NAACP Gala Planning Commitee and the past govenor's wife, Cheri Daniels.

The Fort Wayne/Allen County Branch of NAACP presented its Women in NAACP Black History Month Brunch on Sat., Feb. 22, 2014, at Link’s Wonderland, 1711 East Creighton Avenue in Fort Wayne. The theme was “The Battle is Not Over!”

The featured guest was Debra Faye Williams-Robbins, J.D. A graduate of Northrop High School, Ms. Williams-Robbins earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and her Master of Arts Degree from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Ms. Williams-Robbins began to study law at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. She received the Juris Doctor degree in May 2000 and after passing the Indiana Bar examination on her first attempt, was admitted to the Indiana Bar in May 2001. Ms. Williams-Robbins is an NAACP Executive Member and Chair of the Back to School, Stay in School initiative.

DeShawn Moore, publisher of MGM Magazine served as mistress of ceremonies.
